The Kanga Cricket League, officially known as the Dr. H. D. Kanga Memorial Cricket League, is a historic cricket competition held in Mumbai, India. Inaugurated in 1948, it is named after Hormasji Kanga, a first-class cricketer and former selector for the Indian national team.
What is Kanga League cricket?
The Kanga League is unique because it is played during Mumbai's monsoon season, from July to October. This period brings unpredictable weather and makes the cricket grounds wet and challenging.
According to former Mumbai captain Milind Rege, it is these tricky conditions that has molded cricketers from the state, resulting in Mumbai's domination of Indian domestic cricket.
"Playing the Kanga League in July is a great move by the MCA. It is one of Mumbai's finest tournaments. It has contributed in making Mumbai's cricketers Khadoos stubborn. The Kanga needs to be played in wet conditions, and the umpires need to realise that, instead of looking at the outfield and run-up. Mumbai's cricket was so strong because a tournament like this enabled our cricketers to prepare three months in advance compared to other state teams. If you bat for one hour in the Kanga league, it's like batting for 4-5 hours in first-class cricket," he told Times of India.
The conditions mean the ball can behave unpredictably, stopping, shooting, skidding, and swinging in a single day's play. As a result, even scoring 30 or 50 runs is considered an achievement.

The Kanga League features 98 teams divided into seven groups, each consisting of 14 teams. The league's challenging conditions have produced some of India's finest cricketers. Let's take a look at them.
