“My life outside cricket has changed however — spending more time with my family and enjoying experiences with them at home or abroad is something that’s even more important to me," Williamson was quoted as saying by Fox Sports.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) sees this move as beneficial. According to NZC chief executive Scott Weenink, this arrangement helps prolong Williamson’s career. While centrally contracted players are generally preferred for the Black Caps, an exception is made for Williamson due to his contribution to the team.
“This is a good way to help keep Kane in the international game so that he continues to play a major role for the Black Caps — both now and in the years to come,” Weenink said in a statement.

This decision is not unprecedented. Two years ago, bowler Trent Boult was released from his national contract to play in domestic T20 leagues. Boult has mostly represented New Zealand in ICC events since then, with his last Test appearance in June 2022.
