The 2023 final was the first time that Spain and England had met each other at the Women's World Cup finals. They have previously met twice during the qualifying stage of the tournament.

Heading into the final itself, England had a better record in this fixture when the two countries meet, but it didn't help their cause.

In a total of 17 meetings, the Lionesses have won seven times, while La Roja have only seen victory four times. The other matches ended in draws.

The first of Spain's wins came at the 2013 European Championships as Alexia Putellas' 93rd-minute goal gave her side a 3-2 win. Their latest victory before the World Cup final came in the 2020 SheBelieves Cup, where Putellas scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory.

Before that, the last encounter between the two countries was a close-fought game that saw England progress to the semifinals of the 2022 Women's European Championship, which they went on to win at Wembley Stadium.

La Roja took the lead at Brighton & Hove Albion's Amex Stadium through Esther Gonzalez in the 54th minute of the match. Ella Toone equalised for the host nation in the 84th minute after being set up by teammate Alessia Russo.
