Having both fallen short in the Copa America semifinals, Canada and Uruguay will battle for third spot in North Carolina on Saturday.

Debutants Canada got off to a disappointing start in the group stage, as they were beaten 2-0 by pre-tournament favourites Argentina, but they would quickly bounce back to earn a 1-0 win over a 10-man Peru and tying 0-0 with 10-man Chile to qualify for the last eight.

They took an early lead against Venezuela in the quarterfinals but rued their wasted chances and conceded an equalizer before winning the penalty shootout to reach the Copa America semifinals for the first time. Their Cinderella run at the 2024 Copa America ended on Tuesday night, though, as they were outclassed by defending champions Lionel Messi and Argentina in a 2-0 defeat.

They take on a Uruguay side who came up short 1-0 in their 2024 Copa América semifinal against Colombia in a dramatic affair that was perhaps the most entertaining game of the whole tournament.

With the man advantage Uruguay dominated the ball in the second half and did apply pressure on Colombia, but they didn't really create much in the way of clear chances.

Canada vs. Uruguay predicted lineups & team news

CanMNT boss Jesse Marsch confirmed star man Alphonso Davies's x-rays were "negative" after he suffered a foot injury in Tuesday's semifinal defeat to Argentina, but it remains unclear if he would be able to feature in Saturday's game.

Otherwise Marsch should have a full squad available, with only Tajon Buchanan set to miss Saturday's clash. The Inter Milan star broke his tibia while training for the quarterfinal clash against Venezuela and subsequently missed the semifinal clash against Argentina. He underwent a successful surgery in the following days and while he eventually joined his teammates, he won't be available at Marsch’s disposal.

Toronto FC's Richie Laryea replaced him against Argentina and will likely keep his place at right wing, with Cyle Larin, Jacob Shaffelburg and Jonathan David rounding out the attack.

Canada starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left):  Crepeau (GK) — Johnston, Bombito, Cornelius, Davies — Kone, Eustaquio — Laryea, David, Shaffelburg — Larin.

Injured: Buchanan.

Suspended: None.

A major talking point following the brawl after Uruguay's semifinal defeat to Colombia will see CONMEBOL review whether any players could be punished, and subsequently banned, for this match with Darwin Nunez likely most at risk.

Uruguay will get a defensive boost for Saturday's third-place playoff game with Nahitan Nandez returning from suspension after he was made to take the walk of shame for a horrendous studs-up tackle on Rodrygo in the penalty shoot-out victory over Brazil in the Copa America quarter-finals.

Fellow defender and key Barcelona star Ronald Araujo lasted just 33 minutes in the same game before succumbing to a serious-looking leg injury, which ruled him out for the rest of the tournament and for up to eight weeks; a devastating blow for both club and country.

Araujo's crushing absence opened the door for Atletico Madrid stalwart Jose Gimenez to return to the Celeste defence alongside Sebastián Cáceres and Mathías Olivera as head coach Marcelo Bielsa switched to a back-three system.

It remains to be seen if the former Leeds United boss persists with the dynamic 3-2-4-1 formation after the disappointing result last time out, but he's likely to wield the axe and hand minutes to various fringe stars who have seen little action over the course of the tournament.

Flamengo duo Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Guillermo Varela, Los Angeles FC winger Cristian Olivera and promising Club America attacker Brian Rodríguez are all in line to see prominent action in this third-place play-off game.

Uruguay starting lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left):  Rochet (GK) — Varela, Gimenez, Olivera, Vina — Valverde, Ugarte — Pellistri, De Arrascaete, C. Olivera— Nunez.

Injured: Araujo.

Suspended: None.

Canada vs. Uruguay prediction

  • Score prediction: Canada 1-2 Uruguay

Uruguay enter this third-place playoff as the favorites, looking to bounce back from their semi-final disappointment. The pressing question, however, is their current state of mind. Saturday's clash will be a stern test for Uruguay, who may still be reeling from the psychological fallout of their recent setback. Playing in a third-place match was far from their ambition; their sights were firmly set on the final.

It's notoriously challenging for heavyweight teams in this position to reset their mindset and shift their focus to what is often seen as a consolation prize that no one truly desires. Every player, coach, and fan would much rather be preparing for the final, making it difficult to find the motivation needed for this encounter.

On the other side, Canada will be upbeat with bronze medal on offer. They can take pride in their performance against the World Cup winner last time out. But while Canada went toe-to-toe with Messi and Co. and still have something to play for, even a slightly rotated La Celeste side - featuring talent with points to prove, it should be noted - ought to be too strong.
