Damian Warner returns for his fourth Olympic games, hoping to maintain his decathlon greatness while representing Team Canada.
Warner is considered one of the greatest decathlon athletes in Canadian history. He told Olympics.com how much it means to continue performing at the highest level every four years.
“To go back to the Olympics for a fourth time is a privilege," Warner said. Not everyone gets to do that, so I don’t take it lightly. I feel like I’m in great shape and ready to go. I’m looking forward to getting back there and defending my title."
Warner is part of a select group of athletes who are also making second, third, and fourth Olympic trips, adding to the prestige of the opportunity.
According to an April article from Olympic.CA, Warner played football and basketball in high school before a few school mentors recognized he was playing the wrong sport. This eventually led to Warner's Olympic run, where he has earned seven medals.
Warner's quest for an eighth will continue in Paris; at 34, he can define his legacy.
