The Jaguars were one of the most disappointing teams in the 2023 NFL season.
Playing in what was perceived to be a weak AFC South, Jacksonville was the heavy favorite to win the division. Some went as far as to peg them as Super Bowl sleepers, while star quarterback Trevor Lawrence was a popular underdog pick to win NFL MVP.
None of those projections came to fruition, as the Jaguars finished 9-8 and missed the playoffs altogether. Jacksonville got out to a promising 8-3 start but the wheels fell off from there. It lost five of its final six games to close the season, getting passed by the Texans for the AFC South crown.

Now, the Jaguars will look to bounce back in 2024, but Houston has leapfrogged them as the best team in the division.

The Jaguars have the 14th-toughest strength of schedule in the NFL for the 2024 season, per Sharp Football Analysis. That is just above the league average.

Toughest tests: When you break down the Jaguars' opponents by level of difficulty, it feels like their strength of schedule ranking should be tougher. They have to play the Texans home and away. Road games against the Bills, Dolphins, Lions, and Eagles are brutal, as are home games against the Browns and Packers. The Jets and Bears are swing games, but neither will be an easy win. Jacksonville has more than a handful of tough tests this season.
Biggest breaks: The Jaguars have two home games against teams who will potentially be starting rookie quarterbacks, the Patriots and Vikings. Even as a division rival, a home-and-home with Will Levis and the Titans shouldn't pose too much of a threat. A road game against the Raiders also marks a soft spot in the schedule.
Bottom line: Lawrence and the Jaguars won't enter this season with the same lofty expectations as last year, but there will still be pressure to perform. Missing the playoffs was inexcusable in 2023. Jacksonville's roster is too talented to let that happen again. Anything less than competing for an AFC South title or wild-card spot would be an underachievement. This is a prove-it year for Lawrence as a franchise quarterback.
