The Angels offloaded closer Carlos Estevez to the Phillies ahead of the 2024 MLB trade deadline, but they seem to have found a high-quality replacement in Ben Joyce.

Joyce has posted a 2-0 record with a 2.08 ERA, four saves and 33 strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings pitched. The 2022 third-round pick sports one of the best fastballs in MLB and put it on display during the Angels' 6-2 loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Joyce entered the game in the ninth inning tasked with keeping the 2-all game tied. He managed to do that by striking out Tommy Edman with a 105.5 mph fastball that grazed the bottom of the zone.

Edman swung at the pitch, so it would have been a strikeout either way. Even so, it was an impressive feat for the Angels pitcher as he looks to establish himself at the big-league level.

Here's what to know about Joyce's pitch and where it ranks among MLB's fastest.

Fastest pitch in MLB history

Joyce's 105.5 mph fastball ranks as the third-fastest pitch in MLB history. Only Aroldis Chapman has beaten that speed, peaking at 105.8 mph in 2010 and 105.7 mph in 2016.

That said, neither of Chapman's pitches were to strike a batter out. Joyce's 105.5 mph toss resulted in a swing-and-miss strikeout, making his throw the fastest-ever strikeout pitch in MLB history.

Joyce is now just one of three pitchers to officially throw 105 mph or faster during an MLB in the Statcast Era (which dates back to 2008). Chapman and Jordan Hicks are the other two.

Below is a full look at the fastest pitches in MLB history:

Pitcher Date Miles per hour
Aroldis Chapman Sept. 24, 2010 105.8
Aroldis Chapman July 18, 2016 105.7
Ben Joyce Sept. 3, 2024 105.5
Aroldis Chapman July 18, 2016 105.4
Aroldis Chapman July 22, 2016 105.2
Aroldis Chapman Aug. 7, 2024 105.1
Aroldis Chapman Aug. 2, 2016 105.1
Aroldis Chapman July 22, 2016 105.1
Aroldis Chapman July 18, 2016 105.1
Jordan Hicks May 20, 2018 105
Aroldis Chapman July 23, 2016 105
Jordan Hicks May 20, 2018 105

Joyce is still just 23 years old, so he may be able to take aim at Chapman's record — provided he remains in the closer role for the Angels.
