From looking for hardware to having it installed in his leg.

After taking the course at the 2023 Masters, Woods withdrew from the tournament before the final round, citing a re-aggravation of plantar fasciitis. Now, Woods has undergone another surgery to correct issues in his lower half.

On April 19, it was revealed that the golfer underwent a procedure known as a "subtalar fusion," essentially ankle fusion surgery, to continue to correct issues in his ailing leg.

It's unclear if the plantar fasciitis issue led to the new surgery, but Woods acknowledged that he didn't have a whole lot left in his right leg, which he injured in the car crash that almost cost him the appendage in 2021.

Here's the latest on Woods, and when he may be back on the course:

Tiger Woods injury update

On April 19, Woods' Twitter account revealed the golfer underwent a "subtalar fusion," an ankle surgery, to continue to help repair the right leg, and specifically ankle, that Woods injured in his accident in 2021.

Earlier today, Tiger underwent a subtalar fusion procedure to address his post-traumatic arthritis from his previous talus fracture.

It was performed by Dr. Martin O'Malley at tHSS Sports Medicine Institute in New York City. He has determined the surgery to be successful.

Tiger is currently recovering and looks forward to beginning his rehabilitation.

According to FootCareMD, a boot or cast is used for 8-to-12 weeks in recovery, or sometimes longer. That would put Woods out until the summer months, and potentially longer, if he decides to make a comeback this year.

It's unclear how long Woods will be sidelined with the injury, and when he may return to the course. That said, he likely will not play at the 2023 PGA Championship, which begins on May 18.

The year's remaining two majors are essentially spaced a month apart from there, with the U.S. Open set to begin June 15 and the Open Championship on July 20.

What is a subtalar fusion?

Subtalar fusion is a procedure that fuses bones around the ankle to restore function and relieve pain, according to FootCareMD. The surgeon enters through the side of the foot, removing cartilage and fixing deformity, before securing the joint with hardware.

The subtalar joint is to "allow for side-to-side movement of the foot and ankle." It's especially helpful for walking on uneven surfaces — such as a golf course.

Woods, 47, has undergone several surgeries for both his right leg and his back, which has kept him out of action for large chunks of the PGA Tour calendar in recent years.
