F1 Monaco qualifying results, grid order for 2024 Grand Prix: Charles Leclerc takes pole for Ferrari, Verstapp

<p>Charles Leclerc will start his home grand prix in pole position on Sunday after a brilliant qualifying performance in Monaco.</p>

<p>The Ferrari driver outperformed the rest in practice and put together an outstanding lap of 1:10.270 to claim P1 ahead of Oscar Piastri, who was flying in the McLaren. It was the 250th pole position for the Scuderia.</p>

<p>Carlos Sainz took P3 ahead of the other McLaren of Lando Norris, but there was disappointment for world champion Max Verstappen. Chasing a record 10th consecutive pole position, he struggled in the final sector on his best laps to lose crucial time, and his last attempt ended when he clipped the barrier.</p>

<p>It was a disappointing day generally for Red Bull, who saw Sergio Perez exit in Q3 amid persistent issues with grip and stability.</p>

<p>Hass drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen, who qualified 12th and 15th respectively, were disqualified from the session after the race stewards discovered an irregularity with the opening of the DRS systems on their rear wings. Hulkenberg and Magnussen will start Sunday's race from the pit lane.</p>

<h3>End of Q3: Charles Leclerc takes pole position!</h3>

<p>What a lap from the Ferrari man that was. Piastri will start P2 after a brilliant drive today. Verstappen clipped the wall on his final lap and railed against a car that's "as slippery as ****".</p>

<p><strong>3 mins to go:</strong> Sainz and Verstappen decide to go earlier than planned, giving up potentially optimum tyre conditions for a clearer track (everyone is now on softs). </p>

<p><strong>6 mins to go:</strong> Verstappen goes third! The champion seemed to lose time through that final sector again. He'll have another chance, but it's going to take something pretty special. Piastri is currently second, less than 0.03s behind the pole-sitter.</p>

<h3>Start of Q3</h3>

<p>This is the biggest 12 minutes of qualifying you're likely to see. Who gets pole?</p>

<p>Norris leads Verstappen and Piastri, with Leclerc fourth-fastest, ahead of Pierre Gasly. That means his teammate, Esteban Ocon, is out, as is Daniel Ricciardo, who says he really struggled with his tyres.</p>

<p><strong>4 mins to go:</strong> Hamilton throws himself around the final corners and goes third, but he's less than a 10th slower than Verstappen. Leclerc now tries to respond to Sainz's positive lap, and he goes second fastest behind the new leader, Piastri — who then tells his team that he's hit the wall.</p>

<p><strong>8 mins to go:</strong> Verstappen takes a 10th off his own time and now leads Carlos Sainz, who has the edge on Leclerc at the moment. This is proving as close as was predicted — none of the drivers feel particularly safe yet.</p>

<p><strong>11 mins to go:</strong> Norris clocks a 1:11:372, only for Verstappen to take nearly two 10ths off that time. If he's still struggling with that bouncing issue, it's not showing right now. Hulkenberg has a lucky escape as he clips the barrier with only the rear of the car, avoiding any major drama.</p>

<h3>Start of Q2</h3>

<p>The second phase of qualifying is off and running.</p>

<p>Russell and Hamilton are the top two at the end of Q1. Lando Norris saves himself with his final lap, but <strong>Sergio Perez is out!</strong> It's a repeat of last year for the Mexican. Fernando Alonso is also out before Q2.</p>

<p><strong>4 mins to go:</strong> We've just been treated to an extended helmet-cam show on Leclerc's latest flying lap, which saw him go quickest with 1:11:653. When you see those corners at driver level, you understand the importance of qualifying on pole here.</p>

<p><strong>5 mins to go:</strong> Piastri is the first man to go under 1:12. He leads from Hamilton and Russell. Leclerc is a little annoyed that he's "out of sync" with the rest of the field, which is Driver Speak for "we're stuck in traffic". At the moment, they're refusing the temptation to switch to faster tyres.</p>

<p><strong>10 mins to go:</strong> George Russell and Hamilton cross the line in quick succession. Russell is quicker so far. Verstappen gets closest to going sub-1:12, but Perez is struggling a little more for pace. Meanwhile, the stewards are investigating a possible incident of impeding involving Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz.</p>

<p><strong>13 mins to go:</strong> Verstappen clocks 1:12:790 with the first flying lap of the session. Nico Hulkenberg, Magnussen, and Oscar Piastri promptly go quicker.</p>

<h3>Start of Q1</h3>

<p>We're off and running in the glorious Monaco sunshine.</p>

<p><strong>10 mins before start: </strong>Could Mercedes spring a bit of a surprise here? Hamilton looked good in practice and Toto Wolff thinks the nature of the circuit here is helping them find some time — although he acknowledges it's likely to be a highly competitive qualifiying session.</p>

<p> "I think the trick is going to be the three laps whilst having the tyre in a good window," he told Sky Sports. "I think between P2 and P10-ish, there was a 10th [of a second], so you can look pretty good, and pretty miserable, and basically have the same lap time.</p>

<p>"We have a low-to-high-speed corner deficit. We're not really able to set the car up in the window because the car is complicated. So here, it certainly masks that a bit."</p>

<p><strong>30 mins before start: </strong>Verstappen claimed earlier this weekend that Ferrari were "miles ahead" of the rest of the field, and that certainly seemed the case as Leclerc finished nearly two-tenths faster in FP3. But Leclerc has been stung before by the pressures of his home race. Can he make Ferrari's apparent advantage count this time?</p>
