Max Verstappen took the chequered flag at Monza to win the 2023 Italian Grand Prix and make Formula One history in the process.

After winning last time out in the Netherlands during his home race, the Dutchman knew that another victory would make it 10 in succession, a feat never achieved before in the sport.

At first, it looked like it might not happen given Carlos Sainz's staunch defence from pole position for Ferrari following a delayed start to the race after Yuki Tsunoda's car didn't even make it to the grid thanks to an engine problem.

The Spanish driver kept his former teammate at bay for 15 laps before a small mistake left the door open for Verstappen to pounce down the straight into corner three. After that overtake, the world champion never looked back as he finished the race 16 seconds ahead of his closest competitor, teammate Sergio Perez, who put together a solid performance from P5 on the grid.

Sainz himself finished the race in the final podium spot after teammate Charles Leclerc looked to make a pass towards the end but failed to make any chance count to instead finish P4.

George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Alex Albon, Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso and Valtteri Bottas rounded out the points-paying positions as the Italian Grand Prix delivered the drama for race fans worldwide.

F1 Italian Grand Prix 2023 live updates, highlights: As it happened

CHEQUERED FLAG: MAX VERSTAPPEN WINS THE 2023 ITALIAN GRAND PRIX!! It's 10 victories in a row for the Red Bull driver — a new Formula One record!! He was made to work for this win but he got past Sainz and never looked back. Perez takes P2 and Sainz holds on to finish on the podium in Monza.

Lap 49: Hamilton gets past Albon for P6 on the track. He has that five-second penalty to come so he needs to pump in some quick laps to finish here and keep that position.

Lap 47: Leclerc gets past Sainz at corner one but he outbreaks himself and the pair go side by side towards corner four. They just about escape a collision as both leave the track.

Heart-in-mouth moment for Ferrari fans.

Lap 46: Perez finally jumps Sainz into P2! The Spaniard has put up a great defence but the Red Bull finally delivers enough power to get past him.

Can Sainz reply?

Lap 45: Hamilton receives a five-second penalty. That feels very lenient given that Piastri will now not finish in the points positions.

Lap 44: Well, replays show that Hamilton squeezed Piastri and somewhat initiated the collision. How will the stewards view that coming together? No word as of yet. Perez just can't get past Sainz for now.

Lap 42: Hamilton and Piastri collide!! The Australian rookie has front wing damage as the pair come together. We'll see what the outcome of that is from the stewards.

Lap 41: So it's Sainz from Perez and Leclerc in the battle for P2. There's about 1.5 seconds currently between the trio, who do you think will miss out on the podium?

Hamilton and Piastri nearly collide down the back straight.

Lap 39: Norris and Albon nearly collide at corner one. The McLaren driver has to take to the escape road and eventually give the place back to his close friend.

Lap 38: Verstappen expands his lead even further as it now sits at 8.2 seconds to Sainz. Perez is beginning to now close on the Spaniard as well with Leclerc in tow.

Lap 36: After getting past Leclerc, Perez would have been hoping to leave him in the dust but the Ferrari driver is holding on for now. He's still in the Mexican's DRS zone as he begins to put the pressure back on.

Lap 34: There's a great battle developing between Albon, Norris and Piastri for P6. There's just one second between the trio as they look to gain vital points for their teams.

Verstappen posts the fastest lap of the race.

Lap 32: Oooofffttt! Perez stays side-by-side with Leclerc and dips a tyre into the grass which nearly ends in disaster.

He makes no mistake on the next lap though as he breezes into the final podium position down the long straight.

Lap 31: Perez gets very close to the back of Leclerc as he eyes a move on the Ferrari pair. No move just yet but that's going to be a matter of time really. Norris is putting Albon under big pressure for P6.

Lap 29: Hamilton finally pits after being overtaken by Sainz, Leclerc and Perez on the same lap. That was probably painful! The British driver comes back out in P10.

Verstappen leads by 5.5 seconds.

Lap 27: Ohhhh the two McLaren cars come together at corner one as Piastri collides with the side of Norris' car. They both survive with no damage but it's been noted by the marshals.

Lap 26: Verstappen overtakes Hamilton to regain the lead of this race. Sainz puts in the fastest lap so far but he's 4.5 seconds behind the Dutchman for now.

Lap 25: Piastri pits so Hamilton leads for now but he hasn't stopped yet. Russell gets a five second penalty after he leaves the track to gain an unfair advantage over Ocon.

Lap 24: Piastri leads a Formula One race for the first time in his career after those earlier pit stops. What an accolade for the Australian rookie!

Lap 22: Leclerc and Sainz nearly collide as the pair meet at corner one, one at full speed and one from the pitlane. The Spanish driver leads his teammate for now after a brief battle down the back straight. Perez comes in himself and rejoins just behind the Ferrari pair - the undercut favours the Italian team this time around.

Lap 21: The current world champion does come in as does Verstappen. Perez stays out which could see Russell undercut him here. It'll be very close!

Lap 20: Sainz come into the pits but it's not the fastest stop. Russell also pits. Will Verstappen respond straight away?

Lap 19: Sainz is very much struggling with his tyres now as Leclerc puts his teammate under pressure. Perez is catching the pair up very quickly too as he looks to steal P2 away from Ferrari this afternoon.

Lap 17: Verstappen has now already opened the gap out front to over two seconds as Sainz begins to struggle. Leclerc is right behind his teammate now.

Lap 16: Just like his teammate a lap earlier, Perez now gets past Russell for P4. It's a lovely move from the Red Bull driver who took the inside of the corner and placed his car perfectly to get the overtake done. Up next: Leclerc.

Lap 15: Here comes Verstappen! Sainz locks up at corner one and the battle continues until the Red Bull driver finally gets past the Ferrari halfway around the track. What a battle that was.

The record longest winning streak is up for grabs!

Lap 14: Both Russell and Perez come off the track at corner one and the Mexican is ahead but is forced to give the position back. That was a close call!

Lap 12: Sainz still leads this race as he perfectly judges his braking spot on the long straight. Leclerc has dropped out of Verstappen's DRS zone though which could prove detrimental for Sainz as the Red Bull man gets away from the extra pressure.

The first pit stops take place with Gasly's mechanics struggling to get his car on the jacks.

Lap 10: In fairness to Ferrari, their car has some mighty top speed this weekend. Even with the DRS open, it's still not enough for Verstappen at the moment.

Lap 9: Verstappen is getting mighty close to getting a move done on Sainz for the lead of this race. It feels like a matter of time..

Lap 8: This time it's Perez's turn to have a go at Russell. The British driver moves to defend the inside of the first corner and keeps P4 for now.

Lap 7: Leclerc is staying right on Verstappen's tail as he makes his own good start to this race. Russell and Perez are just behind as well before a three second gap to Albon in P6.

Lap 6: There's hardly been any movement in the top ten. Hamilton and Alonso have both lost a place but there's not been much overtaking just yet.

Verstappen goes for a first move on Sainz but the Spaniard defends very well to hold him off for now.

Lap 4: Verstappen makes up some time and he has a look into the first corner to overtake Sainz but he's just too far back. Leclerc needs to help his teammate out here to put some pressure on the Dutchman.

Lap 2: That Williams is an absolute rocket ship as Albon gets Piastri straight back on the second lap. Sainz opens up a one second lead to Verstappen which could be crucial. Norris has also got past Hamilton for P9.

LIGHTS OUT: We're finally underway here in Monza following that delayed start and Sainz keeps the early lead! It's phenomenal driving from everyone to avoid contact through the first corner as Russell puts Leclerc under big pressure just behind. He survives for now whilst Piastri jumps Albon into P6.

DELAYED START: The FIA confirm that this race will get back underway at 15:20 local time - around five minutes from now.

DELAYED START: That stricken AlphaTauri can't be moved without assistance from a pick up truck so the start of this race will be delayed for now. What a scene that is as around 250 engineers and team members wait at the end of the pitlane to enter the track.

ABORTED START: It'll be another formation lap as Tsunoda pulls to the side of the track and won't begin this race. The marshals will need to move his car away so we'll go around again at least one more time.

2 minutes to lights out: We're off for the formation lap ahead of the 2023 Italian Grand Prix. This race should be a brilliant one with Sainz, Verstappen, Leclerc and others all battling it out for victory.

15 minutes to lights out: The drivers are now heading to the front of the grid for the Italian national anthem. This one is going to be loud infront of a packed out Monza crowd especially with a Ferrari on pole position!

30 minutes to lights out: All the cars have made their way to the grid for the start of today's race.

Interestingly, it looks like some drivers have opted for the soft tyres and others the mediums. This race is usually a one stop but a safety car stoppage could come into play for those on the soft tyres.

45 minutes to lights out: What of Verstappen's chances of grabbing that record breaking win today? Well after qualifying yesterday he didn't seem too displeased and mentioned on team radio about Ferrari looking quick over one lap but maybe not holding a great race day car at present.

Given that, it's pretty obvious that he fancies his chances of winning again here in Monza and he'll be hoping that teammate Perez can provide some help by putting pressure on from behind as he starts in P5.

1 hour to lights out: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of the 2023 Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Carlos Sainz stole pole position away from Max Verstappen in qualifying yesterday but can the Dutchman respond to take a record tenth straight victory today? We'll find out shortly..
