The perception of the tight end position has been through some serious changes in the last few years. Last offseason, the positional value provided by Travis Kelce led to many people arguing that he could be the most expensive player in auctions. Looking back to our auction values from last year, Kelce was listed at $46 while the TE2, Mark Andrews, slotted in at $23. Given how heavily Kelce had dominated the position, the massive upcharge was not ridiculous.
But the tight end position is changing once again in 2024. Kelce is beginning to "slow down". He is still an elite fantasy asset, but he is not valued head and shoulders above the competition.

The injection of youthful talent across the position has changed how tight ends will be drafted this season. Players like Sam LaPorta, Trey McBride, and Dalton Kincaid all burst onto the scene last season. Their arrival has introduced a fair amount of depth at tight end. And this isn't just "depth" that provides middling production; all three of them are legitimately talented and can be difference-makers within their respective offenses.

With this new dynamic at the position, it seems crucial to lock up a top-8 guy (Jake Ferguson as the 9th is reasonable too). This is not the year to punt tight end and try to scrape together a touchdown each week.

The question becomes which of the eight (or nine) do you take? The answer is likely whoever presents the most value in your league's auction. Overpaying regardless of the player or position is less than ideal. Allow the other teams to get involved in bidding wars while you sit back and pluck the tight end that garners less interest.
