The games have been much more tightly contested during the modern era, despite Klopp enjoying a better record in head-to-head contests against Guardiola than any other elite coach.
In December 2022, City beat Liverpool 3-2 in the Carabao Cup, then thrashed them 4-1 in a Premier League meeting in April. There was nothing to choose between the sides in 2024/25 as they shared a pair of 1-1 draws before City again claimed glory in the title race.

Do Man City and Liverpool have a rivalry?
While not traditional rivals like Manchester United and Liverpool, this fixture has grown in significance over the past decade.
Man City's rise as title contenders has seen their games with the Reds in the Premier League take on extra importance.
In 2018/19, Man City edged Liverpool to the Premier League title by a single point, with the Reds going on to become league champions the following season as the two teams swapped positions on the table.
The 2021/22 season was another close one between these clubs as City once again claimed the title after accruing one more point than Liverpool.
In 2023/24, after their draw in November, the two were separated by just a point at the top of the Premier League table. After the 1-1 scoreline was repeated at Anfield on March 10, the one-point gap remained, albeit with Arsenal top of the table above Liverpool on goal difference and City poised in third. Liverpool faded from the running over the closing weeks and it was the Gunners' turn to be pipped on the final day as Guardiola's men won a record-breaking fourth consecutive league title.
Liverpool's victory on December 1 put them 11 points ahead of the champions in the standings, and it's already looking like Slot's team will take some stopping in this title race.
