The Sharks finally broke their NRL finals hoodoo on Friday in their 26-18 semi-final victory over the Cowboys at Allianz Stadium.

The scoreline was closer than the game suggested, with Cronulla leading 24-0 at the break.

It ended a run of seven straight finals losses dating back to 2018, and they are now a game away from a Grand Final.

Now there is just the small matter of the Penrith Panthers and another hoodoo standing in their way.

Cronulla out to end poor record against Panthers, after previously being Penrith's bogey team

History is certainly not on the side of the Sharks in this matchup, with the Shire side losing seven of their last eight matchups against the all conquering Panthers.

There have been some tough losses in that time too: in the last two matchups Cronulla have conceded 70 points without reply, and have also lost 48-0 and 56-24 in the losing run.

The 42-0 loss this season when the Sharks were in top form and Penrith were without some key players was especially galling, as Jarome Luai outplayed Nicho Hynes all ends up in a dominant display from the defending premiers.

The only Sharks win in this time came in 2021, when a Shaun Johnson field goal two minutes from the end gave them a 19-18 win, though they had let an 18-0 lead at half-time slip; it was also a game where Penrith were without many key players who were on State of Origin duty at the time.

What makes Penrith's current record over the Sharks more remarkable is the fact before 2019, Cronulla won 10 of 11 games over the Panthers.

This run began in 2013 with a comfortable 38-10 victory at home, and included back-to-back wins in their premiership year in 2016, and three wins in 2018.

One of these wins came in the second week of the finals, where a Chad Townsend field goal ended Penrith's season after they overhauled a 20-0 deficit in the second half.

Penrith only broke the run once in 2015 with a 26-18 win at home, before finally getting another win in 2019 when they were fighting to save their finals dreams, and even that win came after a defeat earlier in the year where they surrendered a big lead.

But as Penrith have created one of the great modern dynasties, the Sharks have been no match for Ivan Cleary's men, even though they have finished in the top four for two fo the last three seasons.

Could that run be about to come to an end in Cronulla's biggest game since 2018?
