State of Origin: QLD Maroons coach Billy Slater signs three-year contract extension

Billy Slater has made a huge call on his long-term coaching future, extending his tenure with Queensland until at least the end of 2026. 

After leading the Maroons to a second-straight State of Origin series victory, Slater was coy on the details of a new deal following the final game against NSW, but left the door open to continue in the role. 

As first reported by The Courier Mailthe legendary fullback has inked a bumper three-year extension, with designs to build another dynasty for his state after enjoying a stellar on-field career in the Origin arena.

Slater has been assisted by the likes of Johnathan Thurston and Cameron Smith during his first two years in the role, which saw him take over from current Broncos coach Kevin Walters in 2022.

In a statement released on Thursday morning, Slater said he was excited to continue to building

“It's an incredible honour to be the Queensland coach," he said.

"I'm excited about the journey that this current group of players and staff have embarked upon. 

"I believe they are only getting started. From the very beginning, I was drawn to this role because I deeply understand the importance of this team to all Queenslanders.

“I’m a proud Queenslander and this team means a lot to me. It has been a massive part of my life and I’m extremely grateful to get the opportunity to help other people, not only fulfil their dream, but inspire our state.”

QRL CEO Ben Ikin claimed the move was a huge step forward for the state and the Maroons.

“To be able to lock in someone of Billy’s calibre is a brilliant outcome for our Origin program and the people who work with and support the Maroons,” Ikin said.

“Over the past two years we’ve witnessed a team that has made Queenslanders immensely proud, and it’s been Billy’s vision and leadership driving that.

“Our players are not only going to new levels on the field, but their commitment to engaging with our fans across the state has been first class.

“We’re excited to have Billy lead our team for the next three years and we can now step up planning for 2024.”

At this stage, Brad Fittler is yet to officially re-sign with NSW, but is expected to earn a one-year deal and will welcome Phil Gould back into the fold for 2024
