<p>Guardiola's side struggled for their usual fluency but hit the front after the half-hour when Josko Gvardiol lost his marker Morgan Gibbs-White from Kevin De Bruyne's corner and got in front of Murillo at the near post to dispatch his third goal in five matches.</p>

<p>Murillo touched over from close range when Ederson failed to deal with a corner in first-half stoppage time and it soon became clear that the shoulder injury the Brazil goalkeeper sustained in a collision with Willy Boly was hindering him.</p>
<p>Stefan Ortega came on to replace the injured City goalkeeper for the third time in a Premier League game this season. He should have been picking the ball out of the net almost instantly, only for Wood's horror show to continue as he scuffed again with the goal at his mercy.</p>
<p>City were almost entirely devoid of their usual rhythm, with none of the sparkle that accompanied Thursday's 4-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion. After the hour, Guardiola decided it was time to call upon his top scorer, and the call was soon rewarded.</p>
<p>Nuno Espirito Santo might rue not getting the injured Murillo off the field before De Bruyne slid a pass beyond him and <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/football/news/premier-league-top-goal-s…; target="_blank">Haaland tucked in his 21st goal of the season right-footed</a>.</p>
<p>City squeezed the life out of the game thereafter, finally looking more like their old selves. <p>Most of Guardiola's Manchester City title wins have come with a signature tactical innovation, whether it was the beguiling false-nine fliers of 2020/21 and 2021/22, John Stones roving around in midfield from centre-half last season or various funky deployments of full-backs who aren't really full-backs.</p>
<p>This season's attempt at a great leap forward isn't as refined as any of those, which perhaps offers some explanation as to why this City are a little more clunky than their predecessors, even at this late stage. But it's definitely there and Guardiola wheeled out his latest favourite trick when he replaced Jack Grealish with Haaland as his team toiled.</p>
<p>He'd already removed Jeremy Doku, but this formation is Guardiola's take on Alf Ramsey's "wingless wonders" that won the World Cup for England in 1966. Width is provided by Gvardiol and Kyle Walker bombing up and down the flanks from full-back, where what they lack in finesse is made up for by tireless athleticism.</p>
<p>If that doesn't feel particularly Guardiola, what it facilitates definitely is: loads of really good creative players all in the centre of the field. Today, it was Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva shuttling either side of the imperious Rodri, while Julian Alvarez and De Bruyne roved in support of Haaland. From being the better side after halftime, Forest were overwhelmed, and Haaland did the rest.</p>

<p>Goal 21 of the league campaign edged Haaland back ahead of his former team-mate Cole Palmer <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/uk/football/news/premier-league-top-goal-s…; target="_blank">at the top of the Golden Boot standings</a>. He has 32 in all competitions and it speaks volumes of the gargantuan standards the 23-year-old has set that this season has felt like a bit of a disappointment.</p>
<p>It's true some of the Norway superstar's link-up play can look rudimentary, although the Forest defenders he sped past at the City Ground would have dearly loved to be marking one of those League Two players Roy Keane alluded to. Injuries and associated patchy form have been obvious and Haaland's record in the big games — save for three goals in the two derby wins over Manchester United — has left something to be desired.</p>
<p>But titles can sometimes be won in the games no one remembers, with goals heavier than we recall. In Nottingham, as was the case in dour home matches against Everton and Brentford in February, Haaland stood tall and made the difference when City needed it. Even in his current guise, he's having the sort of season most strikers would kill for.</p>
