Olympics track and field Day 5 results: Gabby Thomas, Cole Hocker claim gold for Americans

Tuesday's slate of events at the Stade de France offered a little bit of everything for track and field enthusiasts.

There was dominance: American Gabby Thomas dusted the rest of the field, including reigning 100m champion Julien Alfred, to take her place as an Olympic gold medalist in the 200m, while Greek star Miltos Tentoglou joined Carl Lewis as the only men to win multiple gold medals in long jump.

There were shocks. The men's 1500m final was billed as a matchup between world champion Joshua Kerr and defending Olympic gold medalist Jakob Ingebrigtsen, one of the most highly-touted head-to-head contests between racers in recent memory. In the end, though, it was a scruffy American — Cole Hocker – who trotted out in front, using a late-race pass to get beyond Ingebrigtsen and Kerr and etch his name into immortality.

All told, 15 glimmering medallions were handed out on Tuesday evening. Some were more contentious than others, but all proved worthy of the effort it took to garner them. That's not to mention the other theatrics, including — most notably — Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Femke Bol's battle for 400m hurdles supremacy. Both supernovas punched their tickets to the finals with relative ease. Now, they appear set on a collision course the likes of which have rarely been seen in the event's glint history.

Live track and field updates, highlights from 2024 Olympics

3:43 p.m.: Thomas takes the gold! Alfred finishes second and American Brittany Brown rounds off the podium places in third! Looked as if Alfred might have had a chance after blitzing down the runway through the opening 100m, but Thomas had enough in the tank to distance herself once they got around the bend.

3:42 p.m.: Thomas and Julien Alfred, the reigning 100m champion, are the ones to look out for here.

3:38 p.m.: Greek star Miltos Tentoglou defends his Olympic title, becoming the first man since Carl Lewis to win multiple Olympic gold medals in long jump. Women's 200m up next to round off the day.

3:28 p.m.: The women's 3000m Steeplechase final ends with Bahrain's own, Winfred Yavi, taking home the gold after posting an Olympic record time! She just outpaced Ugandan standout Perth Chemutai to claim the Olympic crown!

3:07 p.m.: Rogers takes home the gold! She bested Echikunwoke on her third toss, posting a stunning 76.97m distance. Echikunwoke will settle for second place, while Zhao receives third-place billing for her showing.

2:55 p.m.: And it's Cole Hocker who takes the gold! Hocker stuns the field, racing beyond Ingebrigtsen in the final stretch before holding off Kerr for the U.S.'s second-ever gold in the apparatus. Fellow American Yared Nuguese takes bronze, falling just .01 second behind second-place Kerr. What a run!

2:48 p.m.: Plenty of star power in this year's men's 1500m final, including reigning world champion Josh Kerr, defending Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Get your popcorn ready.

2:36 p.m.: A new leader has emerged in the women's hammer throw! And it's American Annette Nneka Echikunwoke who sits atop the totem pole at present, rifling her effort beyond the 75-meter plateau.

2:30 p.m.: Bol finishes in first, recording a sterling 52.57s time, .33 seconds faster than second-place Alice Cockrell. Bol's victory sets up a duel between her and McLaughin-Levrone for the 400m hurdle crown.

2:28 p.m.: And here comes Bol. She has the liveliness in her legs to compete with McLaughlin-Levrone. Let's see if she can get the job done in her semifinal.

2:27 p.m.: We're in the midst of an enticing battle for the podium places in women's hammer throw. At present, it appears that Jie Zhao has the advantage; the Chinese standout recorded a field-best 74.27m toss to race into the lead, three meters in front of second-place Camry Rogers from Canada.

2:21 p.m.: No surprises there: McLaughlin-Levrone punches her ticket to the 400m hurdles finals with ease, outpacing her closest adversary by seconds, not nanoseconds. She'll be joined by France's Louise Maraval, who burst down the final 100m to take her place in history.

2:20 p.m.: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone stepping to the starter's block for her 400m hurdles semifinals effort. Here we go.

1:05 p.m.: Women's 400m hurdles semis are here. It should be a race for second place, although a special mention for Netherlands' star Femke Bol, who figures to be the best chance for anyone to dethrone 400m hurdle star Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone.

10:00 a.m.: Some notable performances from the early slate of events include a sterling 13.01s run in the 110m hurdles by American hurdler Freddie Crittenden in the repechage round of his signature event. He's not the only American to shine in the repechage round; so too did women's 400m standout Kendall Ellis, who punched her ticket to the semifinals after posting a round-best 50.44s figure in her run.
