The Lions are on the up-and-up in 2024, appearing to possess all the pieces needed to make a deep run in the postseason.

One of those pieces — starting QB Jared Goff — just got a whole lot richer.

Detroit and Goff agreed terms to a four-year contract extension, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal places him in a heightened tax bracket among passers. It also ensures that Goff is the highest-paid player in franchise history.

Goff, 29, enjoyed an impressive third season in the Motor City, throwing for 30 touchdowns and 4,575 yards while completing 67.3 percent of his passes for the 12-5 Lions. He formed quite the partnership with All-Pro wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown and reinforced his position as one of the league’s better signal-callers.

Here are the details on Goff’s mammoth extension with Detroit.

Goff is now contracted to the Lions until 2027. The franchise has an option to extend his deal an extra year, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Goff has been a beating heart for Dan Campbell’s side since arriving via trade in 2021. He’s steadily improved his production season upon season. With youngsters Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta showing flashes of brilliance in 2023, the future looks bright in the Motor City. By putting pen to paper on his latest deal, Goff has reaffirmed his commitment to that project.

Oh, and he got a nice little payday out of it. Goff already racked up $161 million as a member of the Rams and Lions. With $212 million set to hit his bank account by the end of 2027, that total will only balloon in the coming few seasons.

Jared Goff career stats

Goff came out of the gates as a starter. Such is the case when you’re a No. 1 selection. By Year No. 2, he had emerged as one of the league’s better throwers, tossing for 3,804 yards and 28 touchdowns to just seven interceptions.

Goff reached his absolute high-water mark in 2018, throwing for 32 touchdowns and nearly 4,700 yards while bringing Los Angeles to the Super Bowl.

The following years represented something of a downturn for Goff, whose lively arm got him into trouble toward the end of his Rams tenure. He’s turned back the clock with the Lions, passing for 12,258 yards and 78 touchdowns with just 27 interceptions since arriving in the Matthew Stafford trade.

Jared Goff career earnings

Goff has accrued $161 million over the course of his eight-year career. He’s now set to add at least $170 million to that total in the coming few years.

Goff sat just outside the top 10 in career earnings prior to his latest deal. He should leapfrog up the list as his contract matriculates.
