There is a new highest-paid player in the NFL.

Just hours before Week 1, Prescott agreed to a new contract extension with Dallas worth $240 million with the Cowboys that'll keep him under center in Dallas for the next four years. The eight-year NFL veteran quarterback is set to make the most money in NFL history with the historic extension.

Barring a trade, he'll continue to be the cornerstone of the Cowboys offense in their journey to win a Super Bowl for the first time since 1996.

Dak Prescott contract details

Prescott previously signed a massive deal with the Cowboys — a four-year, $160 million contract back in 2021. At the time, it was the second highest annual average behind Patrick Mahomes' $45 million per year.

Prescott's deal was set to expire following the 2024 season, which would allow Prescott to hit the open market.

The Cowboys prevented that from happening, signing him to a four-year, $240 million contract extension. He'll be with the organization through the 2028 season, making a lofty AAV of $60 million.

The extension shifts Prescott up to the top of the leaderboards in terms of annual average. His previous average of $40 million per year was tied for the 10th most with Matthew Stafford and Daniel Jones.

Dak Prescott stats

The Cowboys have enjoyed regular season success with Prescott under center. In his eight NFL seasons, Prescott has a 73-41 quarterback record.

He's led the team to five playoff appearances, but the franchise quarterback has struggled when the postseason arrives. He's just 2-5 in his seven playoff games.

Prescott has thrown multiple touchdown passes in just three of his playoff appearances. He threw four in a dominant win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2023 Wild Card. He threw three in both losses to the Green Bay Packers in the 2017 Divisional Round and 2024 Wild Card.

Here's a breakdown of Prescott's playoff performances.

Season Round Opponent Final score Result Passing TDs INTs Passer Rating
2016 Divisional Packers 34-31 L 3 1 103.2
2018 Wild Card Seahawks 24-22 W 1 1 83.6
2018 Divisional Rams 30-22 L 1 0 99.2
2021 Wild Card 49ers 23-17 L 1 1 69.3
2022 Wild Card Buccaneers 31-14 W 4 0 143.3
2022 Divisional 49ers 19-12 L 1 2 63.6
2023 Wild Card Packers 48-32 L 3 2 89.8

Nonetheless, Prescott has been great in the regular season, especially in 2023. He led the NFL in both completions (410) and passing touchdowns (36), finishing second in AP MVP voting.

He's surpassed 4,400 passing yards three times and 3,300 yards three times in his career. The two seasons in which he missed that mark, he was injured.

Now signed to a long-term extension, the 30-year-old quarterback will look to lead Dallas once again on its journey for the franchise's sixth Super Bowl.
