All-NBA impact on rookie extensions

Anthony Edwards

  • Rookie contract increase $245.3 million

Anthony Edwards hasn't played enough seasons in the NBA to qualify for a supermax extension. Not only that, but the 22-year-old signed a five-year, $204 million contract extension in 2023.

The deal included a pay raise on the extension if he were to make an All-NBA team. Edwards made the Second Team, which will increase the value of his five-year extension by $41 million.

Tyrese Haliburton

  • Rookie contract increase: $245.3 million

Just like Edwards, Tyrese Haliburton will get an increase to his rookie contract extension, which he signed in the 2023 offseason.

He made the All-NBA Third Team and will get an extra $41 million as a result.

What is the supermax contract criteria?

The supermax is a relatively recent addition to the NBA's collective bargaining agreement. It's just more terminology to define the increasingly large contracts players are signing.

In order to be eligible for a supermax contract, a player must meet a list of criteria.

  • A player must have played 7-8 seasons at the time of the contract signing
  • A player cannot change teams in his first four seasons unless traded

If the player is deemed eligible through these two points, they must achieve one of the following:

  • Win MVP in one of three seasons prior to signing supermax
  • Earn an All-NBA selection in the season prior to signing supermax, or earn an All-NBA selection in two of the previous three seasons
  • Win Defensive Player of the Year in the season prior to signing supermax, or win Defensive Player of the Year in two of previous three seasons
