All of Victoria goes on a public holiday, while the rest of Australia knocks off work at lunch-time and heads to the pub.

Melbourne Cup field: When are the 24 runners confirmed?

The final field for this year's Melbourne Cup was finalised on Saturday, November 2 after the running of the Victoria Derby at Flemington. 

Nominations for the 2024 field were released in early September, and have been updated weekly.

The Melbourne Cup field of final acceptances is restricted to just 24 starters and no emergencies.

What channel is the Melbourne Cup on?

This year's Melbourne Cup will be broadcast live on free-to-air via Channel 9 - not Channel 7, who are showing the rest of the Spring Racing Carnival.

Sky Racing will also show the race, but it will be on delay and not live.
