In 2023, the U.S. Open saw a first-time champion at a first-time host. That changes this year, as golf's third major of 2024 is returning to a familiar site.
The U.S. Open is taking over North Carolina, returning to the East Coast after a stint in California last year.
Wyndham Clark won his first major at Los Angeles Country Club one year ago, outlasting a surging Rory McIlroy after Rickie Fowler faded during the final round. But 2024 hasn't treated Clark nearly as well.
This time around, Scottie Scheffler will enter the U.S. Open with all eyes on him.
Scheffler made national headlines at the PGA Championship when he was arrested after a "big misunderstanding" during a traffic incident. But the 2024 Masters winner wasn't able to capture his second major championship of the year.
With that firestorm behind him, Scheffler appears to be fully focused on golf again. He won the Memorial Tournament on Sunday before shuttling off to the U.S. Open in hopes of earning his third career major title.

Pinehurst Resort is hosting the U.S. Open for the first time since 2014, when it hosted both the men's and women's tournaments.
Pinehurst, North Carolina, is positioned between Raleigh and Charlotte, about a two-hour drive away from each city.
This year marks Pinehurst's fourth time hosting the U.S. Open, as the course also hosted the event in 1999, 2005 and 2014. Pinehurst was the site of Payne Stewart's memorable 1999 win, which came just months before his tragic death in a plane crash.

The U.S. Open will head to Oakmont Country Club outside of Pittsburgh in 2025 before staying in the Northeast with a return to Long Island in 2026.
