The Matildas aren't going to achieve their fairytale of winning a home World Cup but they can still finish third via the third-place playoff against Sweden.

Australia has already achieved their best result at a World Cup by making the semi-finals, but finishing third will make it one better.

Sweden were runners-up at the World Cup in 2003 and have finished third on three occasions previously - 1991, 2011 and 2019.

Matildas lineup: Predicted teams for Australia vs. Sweden

Third place playoffs are often opportunities for coaches to give game time to players but expect Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson to stick with a similar team, with Australia bidding to finish third at a home World Cup.

Alanna Kennedy has already been ruled out with the illness that saw her absent from the semi-final, with Clare Polkinghorne likely to start in her place once again.

Regular subs Courtnee Vine and Alex Chidiac could be possible candidates to start, while Emily van Egmond will likely see game time at some point.

  • Australia predicted lineup (4-4-2): 18-Arnold (GK) — 21-Carpenter, 15-Hunt, 4-Polkinghorne, 7-Catley — 16-Raso, 19-Gorry, 23-Cooney-Cross, 9-Foord  —11-Fowler, 20-Kerr

Expect Sweden to put out on unchanged line-up to face the hosts, as they bid to finish third at a World Cup for a fourth time.

Attackers Rebecca Blomqvist, who scored in the semi-final against Spain, and Lina Hurtig could be options to start and will likely see game time if they aren't in the first XI.
