Manchester United and Erik ten Hag are nearing the end of their preseason schedule as they look to build on a third-placed finish at the end of the Dutchman's first season in charge.

Overall, United enjoyed a strong 2022/23 campaign, with defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final, balanced against winning the Carabao Cup in February.

The Red Devils are back in the Champions League, after playing in the Europa League in 2022/23, and ten Hag is busy preparing his squad to take the step up.

The Sporting News looks at how United's preseason has gone so far, as they build towards the big Premier League kickoff.

Manchester United preseason fixtures 2023/24

Man United scheduled six preseason matches in July and two in August. Their first game was a 2-0 win against old rivals Leeds United in Oslo on July 12, followed by a 1-0 victory over Lyon in Edinburgh, before jetting off on a four-match USA tour.

On arrival in the USA, United extended their impressive start to preseason with a 2-0 win over Premier League rivals Arsenal in New Jersey thanks to first half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho.

However, United slipped to their first defeat in the USA up against newly promoted League Two side Wrexham, who are of course owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

United fielded an academy/reserve side in San Diego — with the notable inclusion of veteran trialist Jonny Evans — and they lost 3-1 at the Snapdragon Stadium.

A day later, the senior players were defeated by Real Madrid in Houston. A star performance from new signing Jude Bellingham helped Los Blancos to a 2-0 victory.

Another defeat followed – 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund – fuelling a few concerns from supporters that United were losing some momentum at a crucial time, but they picked up a battling 3-1 win against Lens on their return to Old Trafford.
