Scoring a century in a World Cup final is no easy feat and records prove that. So far, only seven batsmen have been able to reach the three-figure mark in the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

As India and Australia faced each other in the 2023 Cricket World Cup finals on Sunday, Travis Head helped himself on to that elite list with a composed knock that has put Australia on the brink of a legendary win.

1) 1975: Clive Lloyd, WI

In the inaugural year of the Cricket World Cup in 1975, West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd demonstrated exceptional prowess with the bat, scoring a crucial 102 off just 85 deliveries against Australia.  His partnership of 149 runs for the fourth wicket alongside Rohan Kanhai propelled West Indies to a commanding position, eventually securing a hard-fought 17-run victory. Lloyd's stellar performance rightfully earned him the well-deserved title of the man of the match.

2) 1983: Vivian Richards, WI

Sir Vivian Richards, arguably one of the greatest batsmen ever, scored a sumptuous century in the 1979 World Cup final against England. His 138* of 157 balls helped West Indies post a score of 286/9 in 60 overs. The Windies went on to win the World Cup by 92 runs.

3) 1996: Aravinda de Silva, SL

Aravinda de Silva was the star of the show in 1996, scoring an unbeaten 107 in a superb chase, helping Sri Lanka defeat Australia by 7 wickets.

Ricky Ponting, in the 2003 World Cup final, achieved a remarkable feat by scoring a century, becoming the second batsman after Lloyd to do so in this prestigious event. Australia, after opting to bat first, posted an imposing total of 359 for two against India, largely due to Ponting's exceptional innings of 140 not out from 121 deliveries. This led Australia to claim their third World Cup title with a 125-run victory. Ponting rightfully earned the title of the man of the match in the final showdown, which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa.

5) 2007: Adam Gilchrist, AUS

In the 2007 World Cup, Adam Gilchrist made a resounding impact by smashing an unbeaten 149 runs off just 104 balls. This formidable innings powered Australia to a total of 281 for four in 38 overs against Sri Lanka at Kensington Oval, Barbados. Gilchrist's exceptional display rightfully earned him the man of the match title in this thrilling encounter.

6) 2011: Mahela Jayawardena, SL

In the 2011 World Cup, a remarkable century was scored by Mahela Jayawardena for Sri Lanka in a tense battle that ultimately ended in a losing effort. Choosing to bat after winning the toss, Sri Lanka posted a competitive total of 274 for six in their allotted 50 overs. Jayawardena's spectacular innings of 103 not out off 88 balls played a pivotal role in their innings. 7) 2023: Travis Head, AUS

Faced with a tricky chase of 241 against India at Ahmedabad in the 2023 World Cup final, Australia were struggling at 47/3 when Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne joined forces to lead the Aussies to a victory. Head scored 137 off 120 balls to win his side a sixth World Cup title.
