In November 2022, American heavyweight Jermaine Franklin performed very well in a majority decision loss to Dillian Whyte. Well, his prize for that impressive showing is a <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/us/boxing/news/anthony-joshua-vs-jermaine-…; target="_blank">huge opportunity against former two-time unified champion Anthony Joshua.

The bout, plus undercard action, will be broadcast live by DAZN from the O2 Arena in London on April 1.

Prior to the Whyte setback, Franklin had never boxed a world-level opponent in his professional career. However, during those 12 rounds against a former world title challenger, the 29-year-old displayed impressive hand speed, durability, and fighting heart.

"I've always been confident in myself - I never lacked in confidence," said Franklin during the launch press conference. "I feel like I won the [Whyte] fight 7-5 from what I watched. But it's boxing, I'm not going to cry about it. It was just back to the drawing board for me."

The Whyte showdown told us a lot about the “989 Assassin”, but there’s more to tell. Here's a primer on Franklin’s boxing career including a look into his record, stats, and previous opposition.

Who is Jermaine Franklin?

Franklin hails from Saginaw, Michigan, and has been boxing professionally since 2015. He has an impressive record of 21-1 (14 KOs), and a 67% knockout ratio is ample proof of his hitting power.

Franklin’s best triumphs came against Rydell Booker (UD 10) and Jerry Forrest (SD 10) in 2019. He had excellent momentum at that point, but managerial issues led to an involuntary two-and-a-half-year layoff. The Michigan native knocked off the ring rust with a warm-up bout in May before signing for Whyte.

While a Whyte rematch eluded him, Franklin now has <a href="https://www.sportingnews.com/us/boxing/news/anthony-joshua-vs-jermaine-…; target="_blank">an even bigger opportunity. A win over Joshua would catapult Franklin into the world title mix and change his life forever.
